Also, research is underway to use a lighter frame for the design of the Freelander by using aluminum and similar materials, which could reduce the fuel consumption.

To make driving a Freelander on congested city roads more economical, a new Freelander model will be released in Spring 2009. This will incorporate an engine stop/start or cutoff system, where the engine is stopped, when the vehicle is halted at traffic signals or moving at very low speeds. This would save a significant amount of fuel.
